What is Sleep Talking? | Uratex Blog

Somniloquy, commonly known as Sleep Talking, falls on a behavioural disorder called Parasomnia. Along with sleep talking, other disorders associated with Parasomnia include sleep walking, sleep eating, night terrors, etc. These involuntary habits are common amongst ordinary people. In fact, everyone is said to have manifested such behaviour in the past. A 2004 survey showed that kids are more prone to talk in their sleep because of their immature state of mind. Such things are just some of the causes of Interrupted Sleep. It’s a fascinating fact that people who sleep talk have zero idea on what they say during the time being.

Sleep Talking

Scientists have different explanations on when sleep talking occurs. Some say that it takes place during the REM (rapid eye movement) sleep because this is when we have a full grasp of our dreams. In this stage, dreams are spoken by the person. However, according to Dr. William Kohler, there is no clear evidence that a person’s exact dream is related to what they end up saying. So if you feel your partner or friend is keeping a secret from you, don’t rely on this Parasomnia to provide facts that would confirm any suspicion you might have.
